Dog Birthday Party Ideas

For a dog birthday party you can have real fun, as this is an easy theme that parents and kids will both enjoy. Dogs are also manageable, so if you were VERY brave you could even have some well-behaved dogs to visit under supervision if you have a large garden or yard! It all depends on how adventurous you feel! Try a dog show dog birthday party, with guests bringing toy dogs and exhibiting them in various categories, for an unusual dog birthday party.

INVITATION IDEAS

• You can make dog invitations easily by photocopying or printing dog pictures.

• If you go for a dog show theme, remember to tell guests the categories for judging on the invitation.

DECORATIONS

Party tableware

• Party tableware can be made with some dog pictures, stickers or just lots of toy dogs!

• Paw prints are fun, especially on a birthday cake! You can make your own napkins with plain napkins and a paw print shape.

• Get little plastic dogs toppers and add them to cupcakes for funky treats. Make sure the kids don’t eat them though!

• Make tiny cookies that look like dog biscuits and serve them in dog bowls! Or make bone shaped coolies with a bone-shape cookie cutter.

Room Decorations

• A banner can easily be decorated with dog pictures or paw prints.

• Paw prints make a neat theme throughout, and kids will giggle at them in silly places, like on the washbasin or fridge door or in the bath.

• Balloons always add to the party atmosphere but will need some paw prints.

Specials for the special child

• A Dog T shirt or sweater is of course a great outfit for the special day!

• Give the birthday boy or girl their own camera to take special birthday pictures.

Gifts and accessories for guests

• All kids love piñatas, and a dog or bone shaped piñata is sure to be a favorite!

• Younger kids will love wearing puppy dog ears, and these can be made too, as this is a dog birthday party activity that can be fun.

Party favors and goody bags

• A dog birthday party needs doggy treats! Bone shaped biscuits (use a bone cookie cutter), candy, dog jellypops – all will be tasty in favor boxes or bags.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

Toy Dog Show

Have the kids bring a toy dog with them, and have a competition Dog Show! Award prizes in categories, e.g. cutest dog, biggest dog, ugliest dog etc. The birthday child can judge if they wish, but make sure everyone gets a prize so nobody gets upset! You don’t want any tears at a dog birthday party.

Dog tricks

Have a dog show where everyone takes it in turns to wear ears and a tail and do a trick. Give them 5 minutes to workout their trick. After each child has demonstrated their own trick, have everyone else try, and give prizes for the best effort to do the trick. Give a prize for the best trick.

Breed competition

Get pictures of dogs and display them. Get the kids to choose which dog they think is the Sheepdog, which they think is the Husky etc. This isn’t just a fun quiz, it’s educational, which is a really good idea at a themed dog birthday party. You can use this game to give them interesting facts about each breed.

Pin the tail on the dog

This is like pin the tail on the donkey, but with a dog picture instead. For added fun, you can growl when they get too far from the right place, and pant when they get close, as a clue.

Dog training relays

Have team relay races with dog tasks. For example, relays to fetch a newspaper and bring it back in their mouth (wrap the paper in plastic!). A relay to fetch a ball, a relay to go find a slipper and bring it downstairs etc. This goes down really well at a dog birthday party as it keep everyone busy and active!
