GROOVY DIGS

Dec’ it out groovy in Scooby-Doo décor with green, blue and orange streamers and balloons. Use construction paper to draw big retro flowers and dog bones (label them “Scooby Snacks”) and stick them all around. Download pictures of Scooby and the gang and post them up around the party rooms. Use a disco ball and Scooby-Doo music or rent the Scooby-Doo movie and have it playing in the background. As centerpieces, attach Scooby Doo Balloons to Scooby-Doo or Shaggy dolls. Meanwhile, throughout the whole party have a good sport (dad or another parent) wonder around with a sheet on his head clutching a box, making spooky ghost sounds but not talking to anyone. Tell the children to “just ignore the ghost.” Explain that he’s just a greedy ghost that doesn’t want anyone to have any of his treasure (just leave it at that, the mystery will be solved after playing the final game!).

GAMES and ACTIVITIES

STOMP THE GHOSTS

Make all the scary ghosts go “poof!” with this fun balloon stomping game. You’ll need white balloons, white garbage bags, a black marker and lots of string. Blow up the balloons and draw on a ghost faces with a black marker. Fray strips of white garbage bag and tie the white strips to the knotted ends of the balloons with precut string, each about three to four feet in length. When the kids are ready, tie the free ends of sting attached to the ghost balloons to the ankles of every child. Now turn on some fun Scooby tunes and tell them to stomp out all the ghosts they can!

DANCE THE MONSTER MASH

Simply play creepy Halloween music on the stereo like “Thriller” or “The Monster Mash" and have the kids dance like gules and goblins! Every few bars stop the music and make the children freeze in the pose they were in when the music stopped. Sure to create giggles when the children try to keep their gulish face and poses!

THE GHOST’S TREASURE

Throughout the whole party, get the ghost volunteer to linger around the outskirts of the party, moaning and booing, clutching his box, saying nothing. Leave the ghost a mystery, until just before you’re ready to serve the birthday meal. Now gather the kids round and tell them the story of the ghost in a hushed voice. Tell them that until today, the ghost just comes and goes, clutching his treasure all the while. Say you’ve always figured him to be a greedy ghost who simply doesn’t want to share his treasure. Until today, when he watched all the kids sharing and having a fun day. Say you’ve had a chat with the ghost and he’s finally agreed to share his treasure, but now you don’t know where he is! You think he may have changed his mind again. Say you did hear that he likes to store clues in balloons for some reason, shrug and gesture to nine balloons in the corner. Before hand, drop a word on a piece of paper into each of the nine balloons: “scrub,” “dub,” “dub,” “look,” “where,” “you,” “like,” “to,” “scrub,” and let the children piece it together. Have the “ghost” lie in the bathtub with the shower curtain pulled and a sheet over him, still clutching the box. When the kids come in get him to say, “Get away from my treasure!” Naturally one of the children will negotiate, and finally he’ll relent and let them open the box, where all their Scooby Doo Loot Bags will be!

SCOOBY SNACKS

Serve Scooby-Doo and Shaggy's favorite snack: pizza, on Scooby Doo Plates with spooky “Swamp Punch,” a mixture of white grape juice with floating frozen hands (green Kool-Aid frozen in latex-free gloves) in Scooby Doo Cups. For the birthday cake, bake cake batter in a rectangular pan and four large cupcake holders, cover with chocolate icing and outline the bone shape in white.

SCOOBY LOOT

For Scooby Loot, pack up some Scooby Snacks (bags of bone cookies, or any cookie with a bone drawn on with icing), Scooby Doo Paddle Balls, Scooby Sky Divers, Scooby Bubble Necklaces, Scooby Gliders and a Scooby Doo Bus.
